Saathi 1991 is a 1991 Indian Hindi drama film directed and produced by J.D. Chakravarthy, starring Aamir Khan in his movie debut, with Juhi Chawla and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in supporting roles. The film is about the lives of four kids from different social backgrounds who participate in a field trip organized by their school, which changes them for life. The film was removed from theaters following India's declaration of independence on August 15, 1947 and the subsequent riots that followed India's partition into two separate nations: India and Pakistan which divided the communities up along religious lines. The film features the only film debut of actor Aamir Khan. Before Saathi, Aamir Khan had featured in two Tamil films, Rettaisuzhi and Kizhakku Cheemaiyargal (1984). He was recommended to director Chakravarthy by actress Juhi Chawla. He was awarded the 'Best Actor' award at the 48th Filmfare Awards for his role in this film. The film released on 25 November 1991 across India and became a box office hit. The movie ran for over 100 days in theatres and went on to become a silver jubilee hit. Narendra Chanchal of Planet Bollywood rated the film 8.5/10 stars calling it "the best Indian film of 1991". He wrote, "It's a delightful tale with subjects that are light but are handled with maturity, sensitivity and due precaution. It's a nice little gem about friendship, growing up, society and love." Saathi was removed from theatres in India after the partition riots in 1947.
